What is the length of the funicular railway from the Lower Station to the Upper Station?

The funicular track stretches a distance of 1,996 metres (1.99km) from the Lower Station to the Upper Station. It is the longest funicular track in Asia.

How many passengers can the funicular train accommodate?

The funicular train consists of 5 carriages with a maximum weight capacity of 7500kg. It can accommodate up to 100 passengers.

Can I eat and drink inside the funicular train?

Food and drinks are not allowed to be consumed inside the carriages. However, passengers can bring them into the carriages provided that the packaging is intact.

Please take note that durians are not allowed to enter the carriages of the funicular train. Penang Hill also offers a variety of dining options for almost every taste and budget. It is an opportunity to explore the gastronomical delights that Penang Hill has to offer.

Can I smoke in the funicular train?

Smoking is not allowed inside the funicular train and please take note that on Penang Hill is also gazetted as a smoke-free zone.

Is the funicular train accessible to wheelchair users?

Our funicular train designed to be wheelchair-friendly, our customer service assistant on duty will also be more than happy to help wheelchair users to board or exit the train. Wheelchairs will also be provided upon early request. Priority boarding.

What is Fast Lane?

Penang Hill Fast Lane allows visitors to have priority boarding on the funicular train. In short, visitors save time on queueing and are able to enjoy Penang Hill more fully.

Ticket include others entrance fees?

Ticket is only for the train ride and visitors are freely to roam the Penang Hill. However if visitors wanted to go any other private operation on the Penang Hill, charges will be inclusive to certain landmarks and places for its own entrance fees.

When is the Bi-annual maintenance?

The trains will be shutting down during the Bi-annual maintenance estimated January/February and June/July.

Do student and school group get any concession rate?

For walk-in students, we do not provide any special student rate. However, we are supporting students and teachers through the school group concession rates.

Will the weather condition be OK upon my visit?

Visitors are encouraged to check the weather forecast before their visits or making ticket purchases. No refund or claims shall be entertained for any unsuitable weather conditions or temperature.

I am bringing my 3-year old daughter with me. Does she need a ticket?

Admission is free for children below 4 years or younger provided they are accompanied by an adult.

What is the operating hour of Penang Hill?

Open Daily, Penang Hill ticket counter opening hours begin from 6.20am to 10.30pm daily. The funicular starts operating from 6.30am. The last trains ends at 11.00pm coming down from the Upper Station. For more inquiries, please visit our website for more information.

Where is the parking space for Penang Hill?

Where can I purchase the funicular ticket?

Ticket purchasing can be made at the ticket counter which is located at the Lower Station or online at here.

Can I change my visit date?

Can i get a refund for cancellations?

No cancellation or refund is allowed.

Procedures for in-bound (foreign) tour groups/tour agents

Kindly follow the necessary steps to enjoy the incentive provided for in-bound (foreign) tour groups.
  • 1) Tour Agents will first have to register with Penang Hill Corporation.
  • 2) Kindly download the registration form and the incentive form available on our website.
  • 3) Please complete the form and email back to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. inclusive of SSM/KPL/LN license or any company registered supportive documents.
  • 4) Upon receiving the registration form and supporting documents, PHC will process the complete application within 3 working days.
  • 5) The Tour Agent will then receive a unique registration no to be used for the incentive claims.
  • 6) Tour Guides are required to present the incentive form provided to the ticketing counter and make full payment.

Procedures for Students Visit

For concession ticket pricing while visiting Penang Hill, kindly follow the steps below:
  • 1) Application letter must be submitted at least three (3) working days prior to the date of visit.
  • 2) If you intend to make an early payment, please submit the application letter at least five (5) working days prior to the date of visit.
  • 3) Application letter submitted must include the official letterhead and authorised signature from school/ IPTA/ IPTS.
  • 4) Complete details that need to be included in the application letter are as follows:
    i) Date of visit
    ii) Number of participants and
    iii) Time of visit
  • 5) Please attach the following information together with the application letter.
    i) Name list of the participants
    ii) Mykad / Mykid number
    iii) OKU card number (for disabled persons)
    iv) Passport number (for students from overseas)
  • 6) Contact details of the person in charge including telephone number should be included in the application letter to facilitate communication between PHC and the group.
